• Addressing Language Impairment

Visual assessments were developed to help clients with language impairments, who may struggle with understanding complex conversations and expressing themselves verbally.

• Assisting Clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Visual assessments can be more effective for clients with autism spectrum disorder, as they often have difficulty with metaphors, idioms, and emotions in verbal communication. Visual aids can make the assessment more inclusive and accessible.

• Supporting Clients with English as a Second Language or Intellectual Disability

Visual assessments can help clients with English as a second language or intellectual disabilities by providing visual aids to facilitate communication and understanding of complex emotional concepts.

• Addressing Attention Span Issues

For clients with poor attention spans, visual assessments allow them to catch up with the conversation when their attention returns, as the information is displayed on a whiteboard.

• Enhancing Collaboration and Shared Understanding

Visual assessments create a more collaborative environment, promote shared understanding, and reduce power differentials between the clinician and the client, especially for those who have experienced trauma.

Workbook Activity 1

(Optional)

You may like to briefly list some of the more challenging assessment client-types, scenarios or contexts.

You may wish to reflect on how you accomodate the 6 scenarios listed and be specific about what you do at the moment?

  1. Working off-road
  2. Working with "poor engagement" or disguised language impairment.
  3. Working with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  4. Working with English as a second language
  5. Working with traumatized indivuduals who are struggling with trust
  6. Time pressed assessments

Over this course as you learn different components of the Visual Mental Health Assessment (VHMA) through this course, have a think about how it may help YOU in these 6 different contexts.
